Motifs offered here were seen on occasion only once in the room — between the front windows: or in pairs over the mantel, as in the vases of flowers from the Elihu Emerson House.

This New Hampshire home allows an exception. The ovals were placed one above the other three times between the chair rail and frieze and widely spaced in an all-over pattern like wallpaper. The frieze in this case also bordered the corners of the walls. The heart design outlined the woodwork of doors and chair rails.
